Fans Await Harry Potter on Video
Ananova Reports:

Harry Potter mania is gripping the nation once again as fans eagerly await the release of the movie on video and DVD.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is on course to break records when it is released on May 11.

Stores have already taken thousands of pre-orders and been swamped by callers wanting to know when they can get their hands on the video and DVD.

Experts predict it could be the biggest selling video ever released in this country, beating even the hugely popular Titanic.

HMV is planning to open its flagship Oxford Street store at midnight on May 11 to cope with the demand.

A spokesman said: "We have been receiving an awful lot of enquiries from customers all around the UK from people trying to find out when it's coming out."

Tesco, which is taking orders online, received a record 2,800 calls last week from people wanting to bag their copy of the film, and pre-orders are outstripping sales of current best-seller What Women Want by 200 to 1.

The supermarket chain is putting the film on sale from midnight at its 24-hour stores on the day of release.

Meanwhile fans are already preparing for the release of the fifth book in the boy wizard saga, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It is not out until the summer but bookshops have been inundated with requests from people eager to be the first to own a copy.

Potter is Hot

The Harry Potter video is set to break records when it goes on sale next month. Tens of thousands of people have already reserved copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with high street stores and some retailers saying they will open their doors at midnight to meet the demand.

Although the video of the boy wizard's adventures is not released until 11 May, experts believe it will be the biggest selling in Britain. A spokeswoman for the British Video Association said demand was set to be "phenomenal". Tesco, which is taking orders online, received 2,800 calls about it last week and hope to sell it in their 24-hour stores from one minute past midnight on 11 May. They have taken more than 3,000 orders in London alone.

Tony Britten, from Tesco.com said: "This is a milestone in movie history and 11 May can't come quick enough for tens of thousands of people. This film is as popular with adults as it is with youngsters." HMV said it had been inundated with calls. It is drawing up plans to open its Oxford Street store at midnight and hopes to organise Harry Potter themed activities for children. Woolworths also said it had taken thousands of orders and would open 30 stores at midnight.

HP Coming Out Again In The Summer?
Express India Reports:

"Kids who missed out on Company because of its A certificate need not feel deprived any more. This summer, a host of movies, which are mainly aimed at the kiddie audience (though parents are welcome too) are lined up for release during the vacation months. For even as Harry Potter, purposely released at this time, is doing very well; on the anvil are Spiderman, Monsters Inc and Iceage all trying to cash in on vacation fever.

Usually films start off with a good opening and then die out but with Harry Potter, its been the reverse. says Raj Malik of Warner Brothers, distributors for the film. It began with a slow start but the collections for Harry Potter are increasing now as more schools and colleges are closing down for the holidays,he adds."

HP2 Coming Along Great
Thanks to The Leaky Cauldron for this report:

Got an email from a friend at the WB today who said in a very unsolicited fashion, and I quote, "HP2 is looking GREAT! You guys will be very happy!" (Alright man, taking your word for it... :-). He also confirmed that there is more action in HP2 than in HP1, which is cool by me, and sent a copy of an official confirmed casting press release. The release confirms most of the casting we know (no mention of Dobby yet):

Gemma Jones as Madam Pomfrey
Miriam Margoyles as Sprout
Mark Williams as Mr. Weasley
Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy
Shirley Henderson as Moaning Myrtle
Sally Mortremore as Madam Pince
All the returning people (no mention of Wanamaker).

Now. It's high time for a trailer!

Irish Actress Fiona Shaw Honored
Yahoo Reports:

Celebrated Irish actress Fiona Shaw was honored by Britain on Thursday for her work as a stage and film performer.

Shaw, regarded as one of the finest actors in the British theater, was made an honorary Commander of the Order of British Empire, or CBE.

Her performances have brought her renown on the London stage, and she has three times won the Olivier Award Britain's equivalent of the Tony Award for best actress.

But internationally she is most widely known now from the film "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," in which she played the young wizard's aunt.

"Fiona is widely respected as an actress of outstanding talent who has brought to life a rich variety of characters on stage, film and television. Her contribution particularly to the theatre has been of inestimable value," Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said as she presented the honor.

The award is honorary because Shaw is not British.

"Politically I feel it's a wonderful sign of the best fusion of both our countries it's fantastic for Ireland and an honor for Irish people," Shaw said.

Sales Good for Potter

HOLLYWOOD Movies for children and families are among Hollywood's hottest properties. But to the dismay of many studios, toys based on these movies are getting the cold shoulder from consumers.

Kids, bombarded with toy pitches for just about every movie and TV show they know, haven't been buying enough of them. That has left retailers with loads of leftover Star Wars light sabers and unwanted Pocahontases.

During 2001, only 27 percent of ticket sales came from R-rated films, down from 35 percent the year before. By the end of the year, five of the six highest-grossing films were family fare, including "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" the year's leader with more than $300 million in domestic ticket sales along with "Shrek," "Monsters Inc.," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Mummy Returns," each of which brought in more than $200 million in North American ticket sales just through December.

Cinema ticket sales in the UK are expected to increase by five per cent this year.

That's five per cent more than last year's 156 million.

'Cromwell & Fairfax' is also filming in Oxford at the minute - looked like they were going to be filming in the Fellow's Garden of Exeter college today. The Citzen Reports:

AN ORIGINAL prop from the first Harry Potter film is to be put up for auction by a kind-hearted teenager who has been doing charity work since she was at nursery school.

Laura Pobjoy, 17, visited Gloucester Cathedral when Hollywood giants Warner Brothers was filming the sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

She asked movie bosses if they could give her anything for auction, and as luck would have it, they did.

Just weeks later they sent her an envelope which appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

The letter, accepting Harry into the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was dropped into the house he lived in with the Dursleys.

It reads: "Mr H. Potter, The Cupboard Under the Stairs, 4, Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey."

But Harry ended up receiving thousands of the same letter because the nasty Dursleys kept hiding them from him.

Laura, a Denmark Road High School for Girls student, was also sent a Harry Potter book signed by the cast as well as two photos of Harry signed by actor Daniel Radcliffe.

Harry Potter Spoof

TALK about a mixed impression - here's comic Alistair McGowan posing as Louis Theroux dressed as Harry Potter. At first glance it also looks as if Weakest Link presenter Anne Robinson and cooking goddess Nigella Lawson are hamming it up as Harry's friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. But closer inspection reveals them to be Alistair's sidekicks Jan Ravens and Ronni Ancona.

The trio have teamed up for a hilarious BBC TV spoof called Louis Potter and the Philosopher's Scone which starts next week. Alistair and Ronni will also play former disgraced Tory MP Neil Hamilton and his wife Christine - who Louis interviewed in real life - as Harry's wicked uncle and aunt.

Explaining his decision to impersonate intensely private Louis, Alistair said: "I thought he looked a bit like me so I had to do him. He has a wonderful voice that goes from being quite dogmatic to whispery and almost seductive. "He's like someone in their early teens who thinks he knows better than other boys his age."

Bush's pox on Head Start
Boston.com Reports:

IN HIS DREAMS, President Bush is Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter's caring headmaster who left no wizard behind. Unlike Dumbledore, Bush wants us to believe in a wand with no zap, a Gringotts with no cash, and a train platform called Nine and Three Quarters, not for sorcery but because Amtrak never gets enough funds to finish the job.

Bush said he will revamp Head Start, the federally funded but chronically underfunded preschool education program. Head Start has been around for three-and-a-half decades. It has been proven in many studies to improve the educational chances of low-income children. It is one of the few federal programs praised by both liberals and conservatives, which happens about as often as Draco Malfoy hugs Harry.

But with annual funding of $6.4 billion, Head Start still reaches just 923,000 young children, about 60 percent of those eligible, according to the Children's Defense Fund. The CDF says that getting to 80 percent enrollment and improving teacher quality would cost an additional $2.1 billion. That would-be increase is less than 5 percent of Bush's proposed boost for military spending. Alas, defending children is a pale priority next to Defense Against the Dark Arts.

The sorting hat ceremony was nerve-racking enough for Harry Potter at age 11, desperate not to be sent to the snide and sinister Slytherin. Now President Bush wants it for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds. The administration swears it is not subjecting post-toddlers to standardized tests. Bush's domestic potions, er, policy adviser, Margaret Spellings, said, ''Testing like you do of school-age children is certainly not appropriate.''

Putting preschoolers under the sorting hat without opening the vault at Gringotts is like ordering them to find the Golden Snitch on a sputtering Nimbus 2000. Bush promises magic while being as annoying as Draco Malfoy, as two-faced as Professor Quirrell and Lord Voldemort, and as cruel as the Dursleys, the wizardphobes who locked Harry under the stairs. Bush's sorting hat is not meant to find any new Harry Potters. His plan for Head Start only confirms that as he promises Hogwarts, he creates mystified Muggles.

 Video/DVD

It won't be out on DVD and VHS for another seven weeks but "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" appears to already be well on its way to becoming the biggest home video seller of all time.

The Warner Bros. movie, which has grossed $316.4 million at the domestic box office, already tops several sales charts based on pre-orders alone even though it will not be available in stores until May 28.

"It'll be huge," said Zane Plsek, director of video for the Wherehouse Music chain's 405 stores nationwide. "This title is pre-ordering at a pace unlike anything else we've ever had."

"Potter" is also No. 1 on the Amazon.com and Wal-Mart.com sales charts, with pre-orders pushing it ahead of the red-hot "Training Day" which has gained added steam since Denzel Washington's Oscar win for the film last month.

The two-disc "Potter" DVD will offer plenty of extras for fans of the film featuring the boy wizard and his friends as they enter the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The DVD includes never-before-seen footage, an interactive tour that allows fans to experience Hogwarts as a first-year student, and interviews with director Christopher Columbus and producer David Heyman about the second "Potter" film set to hit theaters in November.

Many Wherehouse stores, 125 of which are located in Southern California, will stay open late the day of the "Potter" release so die-hard fans can begin buying the video at 12:01 a.m. for a sale price of $19.99.

Microsoft barrier to 'Harry Potter computers'
Anavona Reports:

Manufacturers could design 'Harry Potter' style computers for children or other specialised users, if restrictions are imposed on Microsoft.

AOL has revealed the plans while testifying at penalty hearings in the Microsoft antitrust case.

PC makers want to create a 'Harry Potter' computer with customised graphics and programs, and a computer based on AOL services.

Nine states want a US District Judge to force Microsoft to create a stripped-down version of its flagship Windows software that could incorporate competitors' features.

Percy raves about Potter 2

BBC Reports:

The second Harry Potter film, The Chamber of Secrets, is going to be "really, really, really good" according to Chris Rankin - the actor who plays Percy Weasley.

He said: "I've seen the Chamber of Secrets - and without spoiling any of the magic, it's wonderful and it's going to be a really, really, really good film."

Harry Potter Toys Doing Good

Movies for children and families are among Hollywood's hottest properties. But to the dismay of many studios, toys based on these movies are getting the cold shoulder from consumers.
Toy industry people say wildly popular movies with strong supporting toys always will sell. Toys based on "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," for example, were among last year's hottest sellers. Those included Lego's Hogwarts Castle and Mattel's Professor Snape's Potions Class, a cast-your-own-spells toy.

The estimated earnings for the Warner Bros. release offer a good reason for Hollywood's interest in toys. Salomon Smith Barney projected $400 million to $500million in sales of "Harry Potter"-related merchandise, resulting in a profit of $80 million to $100 million for AOL Time Warner Inc., the studio's parent company. The "Potter" merchandise largely includes toys, novelties, games, paper goods and other children's play items, as is typical for merchandising based on family films.
